Turning Tables Q&A – Ari Roze, Plug Seven Records VIC

Turning Tables
Shining a light on the tastemakers behind the desk

In the lead up to RSD 2022 we’ll be featuring some of the legends behind the scenes at participating stores in a short interview segment we’re calling Turning Tables—shining a light on the faces, names, minds and tastemakers behind the desk who greet our crate-digging friends with invaluable knowledge and an undying love for all things music.

Today we’re featuring Fitzroy store owner, Ari Roze.

What store can we find you at and how long have you been there?
Plug Seven Records. We’ve been in this spot since jeez, um.. 2014? Before that we did sales out of a warehouse in Carlton for a few years.

Ever had any notable cameo walk-ins in store?
We do get a lot of good looking dogs, I mean..it is Fitzroy. Yeh but ahh who else, well sometimes you know DJ’s I don’t know what they look like, so we had Dani from Motor City in here a few days digging thru 7’s before someone whispered he was a well known dude. A nice guy, We had most of Fat Freddies thru, there’s been heaps over the years I guess.. Haruki Murakami came in one time.. and more dogs.

Do you remember the first record that started your own collection? Was it bought, gifted or handed down?
Kinda handed down, my stepdad had Fela Kuti’s Zombie LP and he said if you buy me the CD you can have the record. So I bought a CD to get my first record.

Favourite debut record of all time?
Hard to say, Burning Spear Self titled.. Or Lewis Taylor Self titled LPs come to mind.

What’s your number one pick of the 2022 Official RSD releases?
Theres a couple of pretty cool obscure Jazz Funk releases, one from Howard Wales, and the other from the Bobby Hamilton Quintet..

Favourite in-store performance of all time?
That would still have to be Wvr Bvby for a variety of reasons, but mostly cos it was awesome. 8 piece head nodding Jazz with deep hooks.
