Quality Records Japanese RSD: Melbourne

Quality Records Japanese RSD: Melbourne

Its the biggest day on the Quality calendar (and everyone’s calendar)… this year with a Japanese twist!

In recent years Quality have had The Beatles, Elvis, and Sergeant the Penguin visit the Malvern store for the biggest day on the independent record store calendar. This year, a non existent Japanese pop artist will be making a special appearance (on film) along with Japanese dress-ups and Taikomochi (Male Geishas). A large, recently acquired collection of 60s-80s pop/rock pressed in Japan will be made available on the day.

To refresh you after a long day of music hunting they will be offering Japanese tea and sushi.
If holograms and grown men in dresses don’t appeal to you, they will have the regular RSD releases, huge discounts off everything in store (including selected new vinyl), and live music as always. A feature will be a heavily discounted range of Audiophile Mobile Fidelity vinyl and SACDS.

And the neighbours at Lilette’s French Patisserie will once again be offering $3 coffee to celebrate the day!

RRR’s Neil Rogers and Ian Bland will MC the event with Brian Nankervis making a ‘cameo’ appearance to raise the fun factor

As always, prizes and goodie bags up for grabs and light refreshments on offer, with proceeds donated to the RSPCA. Head down to the basement and celebrate music in its physical form by showing support to the bricks and mortar stores that house it.

Black and white cat

Here’s the deal. Ben at Goldmine Records in Carlton North and Fitzroy North has had dreads for 20 years. This year Goldmine is raising money for rescue cats. More specifically for the Maneki Neko Cat Rescue service, based in and around Melbourne. If the store raises $500 on Record Store Day he will cut off those dreads! Seriously. 25c donated for every purchase, plus they’re taking donations. Is this a challenge or what?

Plus loads of exclusive releases, stacks of great used vinyl hitting the racks only on the day and free Goldmine tote bag with every purchase of $100 or more.

Briggs, one half of Record Store Day ambassadors A.B.Original, is at Northside Records for a signing on Record Store Day. 2.30-3.30pm

A.B. Original is the collaboration between Briggs (Album of the Year recipient at the National Indigenous Music Awards 2015) and Trials, ARIA Award winning producer for Drapht, Illy, Hilltop Hoods, Seth Sentry and The Funkoars among others.A.B. Original was born when the two artists were invited to perform at triple j’s 40 year celebration, Beat The Drum, in January 2015. They produced a short but powerful set which also included the special performance of ‘The Hunt’, a collaboration with Gurrummul performed earlier on triple j’s live at the wireless.

They write songs in the spirit of N.W.A and West Side Connection, while lyrically bringing attention to issues closer to home. Respectively coming from the Yorta Yorta and Ngarrindjeri tribes, Briggs and Trials are socially conscious outspoken Indigenous artists. They bring a new voice to Australian hip hop as A.B. Original.

Their debut album ‘Reclaim Australia’ recently won the 2017 Australian Music Prize and is available for Record Store Day on red, black and yellow vinyl, representing the colours of the indigenous flag.
