Tym Guitars RSD extravaganza

Tym Guitars RSD extravaganza

Once again Tym Guitars have organised an outstanding Record Store Day event with some huge names and very special releases. Details below…

Kim Salmon (Scientists/Beasts of Bourbon/Surrealists etc)
Peter Black (The Hard-Ons/Nunchukka Superfly)
FOREVR
Leavings
Brief Habits
Andrew Tuttle

There will be TWO exclusive Tym records releases, to be announced SOON, available on the day. One 12″ and one 7″ EP will be out through Tym records and will be available through select independent record shops in other capital cities from RSD.

We will have our live DJ spinning vinyl all day with lots of ginger beer and like minded people to hang with while you enjoy live music and flipping through the racks of new vinyl, and some (very) hard to get sold out Tym records which will be arriving especially for the days celebrations.

Kim Salmon really needs no introduction but here’s one anyway. Kim and his early revolving members formed the hugely influential Scientists in Perth in the late 70’s who single-handedly introduced the world to a sludge heavy style of bluesy rock ‘n’ roll that would become the cornerstone for a sound that took over the world in the early 90’s.
Having already moved on by ’83 he then worked in the monstrous Beasts of Bourbon with Spencer P Jones and Tex Perkins and a couple of his old Scientists band mates and released the Axeman’s Jazz, another blueprint of Australian R’n’R.
In amongst these commitments he formed Kim Salmon and Surrealists and all through the rest of the 80’s and 90’s he continued to form bands and push boundaries with old and new friends including Antenna, with Dave Faulkner, STM with Warren Ellis and Jim White, the Business, and then the Darling Downs with Ron Peno.
He entered the 2000’s with an instrumental group with Clare Moore, Dave Graney and Ash Naylor along with others. Never happy to sit still he has so many other projects and bands it’s almost impossible to keep track of them all.

Peter Black is one of Australia’s hardest working musicians with his bands The Hard-Ons and Nunchukka Superfly and his SAD project from 2016 where he wrote and recorded a song, every day, for the entire year.
He also has a prolific solo career having released 3 LP’s in 3 years and toured relentlessly both by himself and with these bands.

FOREVR are a Brisbane band combining their love of real shoegaze with electronics to produce lush, loud, beautiful noise larger than the sum of it’s parts.
This 4 piece brings together massive driving guitar tones and ethereal vocals and heavy synthesizer, along with live drums and bass to make amazing soundscapes.

Leavings is a three piece punk band from Brisbane who combine aggressive bass with heavy drums, offset by discordant and angular guitar tones and yet keep a sense of melody and great hooks.
Reminiscent of many great punk bands but impossible to put into one camp or place, they sound refreshingly new while having a sense of familiarity.

Brief Habits are a 4 piece rock band from Brisbane who combine their love of indie-rock with punk and make it slightly more technical than the run of the mill affair.
There’s hooks and riffs everywhere mixed in among some of the catchiest pop songs with heartfelt lyrics sang with a genuine conviction.

Andrew Tuttle is based in Brisbane and creates an instrumental sonic convergence of improvisation and composition; and electronic and acoustic tones. Performed on instrumentation including computer, banjo, synthesiser and acoustic guitar; Tuttle’s recordings and performances encompass elements of abstract folk, experimentalism, soli guitar, kosmiche and minimalism.

Sonic Sherpa announces Sunday party as well!

Sonic Sherpa announces Sunday party as well!

Sonic Sherpa say…

Last year we had suck a killer Saturday celebrating Record Store Day Australia that this weekend we thought we’d make a weekend of it!
We’ve already announced that we have the great locals Halfway playing on the Saturday, and now we’re doubling down and announcing awesome Melbourne-based indie rockers The Ocean Party will be playing a free instore in Sonic Sherpa on the Sunday, joined by killer NY-based outfitMichael Angelheart Band (formerly known as Shorts) and Melbourne artist Zayd Thring (from Pets With Pets).

The Ocean Party have carved out a massive niche for themselves in the Australian scene in the last handful of years, the six-headed beast having released six albums since 2011 (predominantly through killer Sydney indieSpunk Records) and proved in the process to be as consistent and reliable as they are prolific. Their most recent effort ‘Restless’ (2016) was all killer, no filler and they’re a brilliant live proposition with as many vocalists as they have songwriters (ie plenty).

Michael Angelheart has also been around the traps for many moons, playing in the US incarnation of Scott & Charlene’s Wedding as well as many other fine projects, and is now living on the Sunshine Coast. Zayd Thring is best known for being a co-founder of Melbourne psych veterans Pets With Pets but has played frequent solo shows along the journey so should dazzle in the close confines of Sonic Sherpa.

The Ocean Party have just completed a massive American tour which by all accounts went swimmingly so will no doubt be in fine fettle by the time they drop by Sonic Sherpa to help us celebrate RSD ’17!

As always it’s a free, family-friendly event and BYO, come find yourself some RSD treasures at Sonic Sherpa and catch some top-notch live music in the process!

WHAT: The Ocean Party instore (w/ Michael Angelheart Band)
WHY: RECORD STORE DAY ’17
WHEN: Sunday 23 April @1pm (Zayd Thring at 12pm, Michael Angleheart Band at 12.45pm and The Ocean Party at 1.30pm)
WHERE: Sonic Sherpa

Says Tym Guitars:

In 2016 Peter Black embarked on a project most sane people would say was an impossible, insane quest for a person in several functioning bands, holding down a day job and having a life. He decided he was going to record a song a day, every day of the year.
These weren’t just “sit in a room and strum mindlessly” acoustic songs but crafted, honed and thought out songs in many different genres and styles. Some are acoustic, some are heavy with a full band. There’s pop, there’s noise. There’s punk, there’s … disco. The variety of styles is mind boggling.

For RSD2017 Blackie and I got together to release something on vinyl and I thought I was going to have to sift through 365 songs (of which I’d already heard most) to hone down to 2 songs for a special 7″. In typical Blackie style he says “I had songs left over ’cause I ran out of days” …… I asked Blackie to pick his favourite so he sent me the details (day and month of recording) and a “leftover” unreleased song that he really wanted out there. I then sat down for days going through 363 songs to pick 2 I wanted.
I was trying not to set a genre for the EP but instead find 4 completely different songs that fitted together and could be cut into a 7″ piece of vinyl.

So, here it is. Out on Tym records for RSD2017 on limited edition 4 song 33 RPM 7″, the Peter Black S.A.D EP featuring 4 songs recorded across a mammoth year of recording.

If you haven’t listened to Blackies S.A.D project I highly recommend spending some time getting acquainted with it. It’s a lot of work but then, it was for Blackie to do, and is as rewarding for the listener as it was for the songwriter to achieve.

Blackie is playing at Tym guitars on April 22nd to celebrate the release of this EP and RSD2017 along with Kim Salmon (and band), FOREVR, Brief Habits, Leavings and Andrew Tuttle. It’s all FREE and ALL AGES so come along and grab your copy and watch some great live music.
